A swift police operation on the Barcelona Metro system prevented a potentially violent confrontation on Wednesday, 26 January. Police intervened after a group of youths, armed with knives and baseball bats, intimidated passengers. Officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police force, responded at Horta station, seizing several weapons and citing five individuals.

The incident occurred late in the evening in the largely residential district of Horta-Guinardó. Tensions rose when a group of 15 to 20 young people moved through train carriages at Horta station on Line 5, intimidating passengers and systematically checking each car.
Swift Police Response
Alarmed by the group’s behaviour and the visible risk of an altercation, concerned citizens and metro security staff immediately alerted the authorities. The Mossos d’Esquadra activated a public safety unit, which arrived at the station at approximately 10:05 PM.
Metrópoli, citing police sources, reported that officers intercepted the suspects before any physical violence erupted. During a search, police confiscated several weapons, including knives, blades, and baseball bats.
The operation concluded peacefully, with no reported injuries. However, police formally cited five group members for illegally possessing weapons in a public space. This administrative offence can result in significant fines.
Public Safety Concerns
This preventative action highlights ongoing efforts by Catalan authorities to maintain security on the city’s extensive public transport network, managed by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB). Public spaces, particularly transport hubs, remain a key focus for policing in the Catalan capital.
The incident at Horta station comes amid a wider context of law enforcement actions across the city. The Mossos have recently been involved in several high-profile operations targeting organised criminal activity, from investigating a brutal group assault in the city centre to arresting a gang selling chemsex drugs from tourist flats in Eixample. These efforts reflect a continued focus on tackling both street-level crime and more organised operations that impact public safety and order in Barcelona.
