MWC 2026 Barcelona is set to be the city’s premier technological event once again. Organisers project a significant economic impact of €585 million for this edition. Meanwhile, GSMA leadership has reaffirmed that the Catalan capital remains the industry’s “true global venue.” This debate has been building for months; we previously covered it in the city’s tourist apartment ban.
John Hoffman, CEO of GSMA Ltd, presented the latest data for MWC 2026 Barcelona. The congress is scheduled from Monday 2 March to Thursday 5 March 2026 at the Fira de Barcelona. Although the event recently celebrated a successful edition in Doha, Hoffman was clear about the hierarchy. “It is where everything happens,” he stated, referring to the Barcelona flagship event. This topic was also discussed in another major AI-focused congress.

MWC 2026 Barcelona: Economic Impact and Capacity
The forecast contribution of €585 million to the local economy represents a 5% increase over the previous edition. However, visitor numbers are expected to plateau at approximately 109,000. This stagnation is due to physical limitations at the venue. Consequently, organisers had hoped to expand into the new ‘Hall Zero’ pavilion. Originally slated for 2027, its completion is now pushed to the 2028 edition. Therefore, the current strategy involves maximising existing space. For broader context, we covered Catalonia’s tourism economy previously.
MWC 2026 Barcelona Themes: Practical AI and Future Travel
While 5G remains a staple, the spotlight for MWC 2026 Barcelona will shift heavily towards Artificial Intelligence (AI). According to Hoffman, the conversation is moving from theoretical debate to tangible application.
“This year, you will see a level of debate, deployment, interaction, and future vision around artificial intelligence never seen before,” Hoffman promised. “This is the concept of what MWC is: it is reality and future.”
In addition to AI, two significant new zones will be introduced:
- Airport of the Future: This dedicated area explores how connectivity can transform air travel. It features major players such as Aena and Airbus.
- Space Tech: This zone showcases satellites, quantum solutions, and related product demonstrations.
Conversely, while 6G has been a buzzword, it will take a backseat in 2026. The industry will focus on immediate deployment of current technologies.
MWC 2026 Barcelona: Industry Heavyweights Return
The event expects to host around 2,900 exhibitors. Huawei will once again dominate the floor plan. GSMA sources joke that the company is “practically building a city” within the Fira. Similarly, Ericsson returns with a major presence. Meanwhile, NTT will consolidate its offering into a single giant stand.
With 20,000 senior executives expected, the event continues to drive global policy. “The conversations there definitively influence the communications policies of the entire world,” Hoffman noted. He highlighted the sector’s evolution from simple mobile-centricity to a broader telecommunications ecosystem.
