According to El Periódico Barcelona, the service scheduled to begin trials this Friday could exacerbate existing congestion problems when it launches between late 2026 and early 2027.

User platforms argue the new airport shuttle will particularly overwhelm the Passeig de Gràcia tunnel, where R2 and Regional de Catalunya lines currently operate. Furthermore, they highlight that increasing frequency from every 30 minutes to every 15 minutes will consume valuable track space in Barcelona’s constrained railway infrastructure. Consequently, this prioritises tourist transport over daily commuters travelling to work or educational institutions.
The collective statement comes from Promoció del Transport Públic alongside seven other user associations representing different regional lines. Meanwhile, they acknowledge supporting FGC operating the new service but question the routing decisions. Additionally, they warn that utilising the Passeig de Gràcia tunnel for the airport shuttle prevents its potential use for relieving pressure on the even more congested Plaça Catalunya tunnel.

The user groups propose extending the northern R4 line through Manresa, Terrassa and Sabadell to serve the new airport stations as an alternative solution. Trains from Sant Celoni will reportedly terminate at Castelldefels instead, creating additional inconvenience for regular commuters. Therefore, user platforms urge the Generalitat to reconsider the current plan and develop comprehensive network improvements benefiting all Rodalies users.
