Barcelona gender violence affects nearly three-quarters of women in the city according to shocking new municipal data.
A comprehensive survey reveals that 72.3% of Barcelona women have experienced some form of male violence during their lives, with 31% reporting severe incidents.

The Barcelona City Council disclosed these alarming figures while presenting a new strategy to combat gender-based violence.
Furthermore, the data shows that Catalonia has recorded 150 femicides since 2012, including 20 cases in 2024 alone. Two of these tragic incidents occurred within Barcelona city limits, alongside two infanticides. The statistics paint a concerning picture of the scale of violence against women in the region.
Barcelona Gender Violence Strategy Receives Major Funding
The municipal government has responded with a comprehensive action plan titled ‘Barcelona for the Eradication of Male Violence (2025-2030)’. This strategy represents a coordinated effort between public administration and social organisations to prevent, detect, address, repair and ultimately eliminate gender violence in all its forms.
Deputy Mayor Raquel Gil, responsible for Social Rights, Economic Promotion, Work, Feminisms and Democratic Memory, presented the initiative. The plan places women and children at its centre while incorporating various forms of violence recognised in new legal frameworks. These include digital violence, vicarious violence and institutional violence.
The strategy also emphasises due diligence in public authority interventions and effectively includes intersectional perspectives. This approach recognises that Barcelona gender violence affects women differently based on multiple factors including ethnicity, disability and socioeconomic status.
Judicial protection statistics reveal additional challenges. In 2014, Catalonia saw 1,039 protection orders issued, yet only 48% of applications were approved. This highlights systemic barriers that the new strategy aims to address through improved coordination and resource allocation.
The municipal government has committed substantial financial resources to tackle Barcelona gender violence. Consequently, the 2026 budget allocates over €7.7 million specifically for implementing these anti-violence measures. This funding will support the strategy’s four main action axes covering prevention, protection, reparation and institutional coordination.
Meanwhile, the city continues to address other social challenges through parallel initiatives. The recent €26.6 million housing crisis funding demonstrates similar commitment to social welfare issues. Additionally, ongoing efforts to strengthen housing protections through new housing inspector collaborations show multi-faceted approach to urban social challenges.
The comprehensive strategy against Barcelona gender violence represents a significant step forward in municipal policy. However, implementing these measures effectively will require sustained commitment and community engagement across all sectors of Barcelona society.
