The Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), Fundació Caixa Enginyers and Impact Hub Barcelona have signed a collaborative agreement to launch the Nexus Social programme. Confirmed by the university on Friday, this new initiative aims to foster social innovation projects rooted in technology.
Therefore, the programme is designed to transform academic concepts into tangible solutions that address critical societal challenges. Specifically, the partners are seeking proposals that tackle issues regarding sustainability, territorial development, and public health and well-being.

Nexus Social Programme Funding and Strategic Support
The call for applications will be open from 9 February to 1 March 2026. According to the announcement, the objective is to support projects capable of becoming “prototypes with a technological dimension and transformative capacity.”
Selected initiatives will receive financial aid ranging from €3,000 to €8,000. In addition, the winning teams will benefit from professional incubation services provided by Impact Hub Barcelona. This includes specialised training and project monitoring to ensure viability.
Nexus Social Programme Empowers Student Change-Makers
A central pillar of the Nexus Social programme is the development of student talent. The agreement focuses on training students in key competencies. Consequently, they can act as agents of social transformation under the guidance of innovation experts.
The initiative will assemble transdisciplinary teams comprising UPC students. They will receive academic credits for their participation. Teaching and research staff will also join these teams. Meanwhile, they will collaborate with external entities and companies to address social and environmental challenges. This approach delivers real local impact, similar to the Catalan AI platform Mathew.
