A massive cultural initiative aiming to leave no seat empty is set to mobilise 248 theatres across Catalan-speaking territories and beyond for a single day of performance. The third annual ‘Cap butaca buida’ (No Empty Seat) campaign will make 90,000 tickets available for 288 different shows, culminating in a region-wide celebration of the performing arts on Saturday, 21 March 2026.

Organisers announced the ambitious plan just a week ahead of the event, emphasising its dual role as both a festive occasion and a vital stimulus for the cultural sector. The initiative aims to pack out auditoriums, highlighting the vitality and resilience of the performing arts community.

A Growing Geographic Footprint

Now in its third year, the campaign is expanding its reach significantly. The majority of the 216 participating venues are located in Catalonia itself. Additionally, 20 theatres in the Valencian Community and nine across the Balearic Islands will join the initiative.

The event’s scope, however, now extends well beyond these core territories, cementing its international presence. According to a report by VilaWeb, which first detailed the plans, single venues in Andorra and the Catalan-speaking city of Alghero in Sardinia will also take part. In a major step this year, the initiative crosses the Atlantic to include the Teatro Margarita Xirgu at the Casal de Catalunya in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

This expansion reflects a broader trend of cultural exchange and identity, touching on everything from the evolution of Catalan music to the preservation of local heritage.

New Collaborations: From Bakeries to the West Bank

This year’s edition introduces several novel features. A new local partnership, the ‘Pa del Teatre’ (Theatre Bread), will see artisanal bakeries create a special product for sale on 20 and 21 March, linking the culinary and performing arts in a unique community engagement effort.

More significantly, ‘Cap butaca buida’ has established a collaboration with The Freedom Theatre, an acclaimed company based in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. Known for using theatre as a powerful tool for cultural and social expression, the organisation works to empower young people in a region of conflict. The ‘Cap butaca buida’ campaign will donate a percentage of its proceeds to support their work.

The collaboration adds a layer of global solidarity to an event deeply rooted in local culture. It is a testament to the universal language of the performing arts and its capacity to transcend borders.

A Coordinated Cultural Boost

A coalition of public and private entities backs the ‘No Empty Seat’ campaign, a significant logistical undertaking. Supporters include the theatre association Adetca, Time Out, the Catalan public broadcaster CCMA, and key government bodies like the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Department of Culture and the Barcelona City Council.

The widespread support underscores the importance of the cultural sector to the region’s economy and identity. It comes as Barcelona gears up for other major events, including its role as the 2026 European Capital of Commerce. The ‘Cap butaca buida’ initiative serves as a powerful demonstration of the city and the wider region’s capacity to organise large-scale, popular cultural events that engage residents and celebrate creative talent.
