Barcelona has opened municipal nursery school playgrounds in Nou Barris as climate shelters, giving local residents more places to cool down during hot weather.

The spaces are intended for children, families and other residents who need relief when temperatures rise. They are especially important for vulnerable people, including young children and older adults.

This move sits within the city’s wider network of climate shelters. Barcelona says these spaces can offer shade, water and seating, helping people cope with extreme heat close to home. You can see the city’s official overview of the network on the Barcelona pel Clima climate shelters page.

The Ajuntament de Barcelona has been expanding the number of places available across the city as part of its climate adaptation work. The aim is to make it easier for residents to find a cool, safe space during summer without travelling far.
