Òmnium Cultural has strongly rejected a recent decision by the High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) to provisionally implement a ruling that largely annuls the region’s educational linguistic regime decree. The prominent cultural organisation accused the TSJC of being “obsessed” with the Catalan school model.

Òmnium President Criticises Judicial Overreach

Xavier Antich, President of Òmnium Cultural, voiced his firm support for Catalan in schools. He stated that the Catalan school model is “a model endorsed by the educational community that promotes cohesion and guarantees equal opportunities.” Antich insisted that the people of Catalonia, through the Parliament of Catalonia, should decide this model, not judges.

Antich recalled that Òmnium had previously warned about the need to defend the Catalan school system this year. He explained that the TSJC’s new order “takes another step in the court’s attempt to decide on language use.” This disregards the criteria of the educational community and the sovereignty of the Parliament of Catalonia.

Defending Catalonia’s Linguistic Model

The Catalan school model ensures social cohesion across the region. It also guarantees students’ right to learn Catalan, regardless of their origin or family language. This model has long been a cornerstone of Catalonia’s education system, fostering integration among diverse student populations.

Commitment to Future Defence

Òmnium Cultural affirmed its readiness to “defend the educational and linguistic model wherever necessary.” Antich concluded by calling it “a country consensus,” highlighting the broad support for the current system among Catalans.
