The Col·legi d’Enginyers de Camins, Canals i Ports de Catalunya and La Vanguardia have jointly established the Óscar Muñoz Award for Communication in Infrastructure and Mobility. This new accolade honours the late journalist Óscar Muñoz, recognising his exceptional skill in making complex infrastructure topics understandable to a broad audience. The first award will be presented next Thursday at the 36th Cerdà Awards gala in Barcelona.

The award aims to recognise journalists and communication professionals who have excelled in the infrastructure field. Their work contributes significantly to a more informed and useful public debate, mirroring Muñoz's long-standing contributions to La Vanguardia. A distinguished jury, comprising representatives from the professional college, La Vanguardia, and the journalist's family, will carefully select the winner.

Honouring a Legacy in Communication

The inaugural award ceremony will take place at the iconic Palau de la Música Catalana. This event forms a key part of the Cerdà Awards, the annual gala for civil engineers. The gala also celebrates the professional career of a veteran engineer, who receives the prestigious Cerdà Medal. Additionally, it recognises a major infrastructure project and the innovative work of young engineering students.

Óscar Muñoz, who passed away in April last year, is widely remembered for his professionalism, rigour, and clear judgement throughout his career. His unique ability to simplify complex subjects for the general public was highly regarded by peers and readers alike. The new communication award is not the only initiative honouring his lasting memory.

Posthumous Recognition and Community Support

Muñoz received several significant posthumous honours from various institutions across Catalonia. The Ajuntament de Barcelona awarded him the esteemed Medal of Honour. The Generalitat also recognised his contributions with the National Press Communication Award. Furthermore, scholarships in his name actively support the training of young migrants. These educational scholarships, now in their second edition, specifically focus on the northern area of the Nou Barris district. The 50x20 organisation helps to promote these vital educational opportunities within the community.

The Óscar Muñoz Award will ensure his dedication to clear and accessible communication continues to inspire future generations. It promotes a higher standard for public discourse on critical urban and regional development projects. This initiative highlights the enduring importance of accessible information for all Barcelona residents.
