One of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks has transformed into a nocturnal spectacle this weekend. For the first time in its history, Park Güell has joined the Llum BCN 2026 Festival. Consequently, Antoni Gaudí’s architectural masterpiece is now bathed in a striking blue light.
This Park Güell Llum BCN 2026 illumination marks the beginning of a significant year for the city. Meanwhile, it coincides with Barcelona’s inauguration as the UNESCO World Capital of Architecture for 2026. From 6 to 8 February, residents and visitors can see the UNESCO World Heritage Site in a completely new dimension.

Park Güell Llum BCN 2026: A New Light on Modernist Icons
The special lighting event runs for three nights between 18:00 and 22:00. However, it is not a standard floodlight display. Instead, the installation specifically highlights the park’s most emblematic features. Therefore, it accentuates the unique relationship between Gaudí’s organic architecture and the surrounding nature.
Key areas of the architectural ensemble receiving this special treatment include:
- The Porter’s Lodge (Conserjería)
- The Guard’s House (Casa del Guarda)
- The Hypostyle Room (Sala Hipóstila)
- The world-famous Dragon Stairway (Escalinata del Drac)
Organisers state that the green enclosure aims to use light to emphasise the intrinsic link between Barcelona’s urban fabric and its rich cultural heritage.
Park Güell Llum BCN 2026: A Triple Centenary Celebration
The choice of 2026 for Park Güell’s debut in the light festival is no coincidence. The year holds profound historical weight for the city. In addition, it has been declared the ‘Gaudí Year’ to commemorate the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death in 1926.
Furthermore, this specific activity coincides with the 100th anniversary of Park Güell opening its gates as a public park. Originally designed as a private residential estate which failed commercially, it was eventually converted into the municipal garden that millions admire today.
The blue illumination serves as a visual curtain-raiser for the extensive programme planned for Barcelona’s tenure as the UNESCO World Capital of Architecture for 2026. Therefore, it promises a year where Barcelona’s architectural legacy will take centre stage globally.
