Park Güell residents are demanding that summer-level bus frequencies become permanent, arguing that tourist crowds persist well beyond the peak season.
Local platform Recuperem Park Güell claims that despite a slight November dip, visitor numbers in September and October remained comparable to summer, yet Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) reduced services.

Consequently, the V19 bus line, which connects Port Vell to the Gaudí park, remains overcrowded, leaving vulnerable residents standing while tourists sit.
Why Park Güell Residents Are Fighting for Better Transport
Spokesperson Marta Molas criticises the perceived broken promise from authorities. “They sold it to us as a measure that was here to stay,” she insists, referring to a temporary summer service boost. Families report that TMB currently operates the V19 at 7-8 minute intervals on weekdays, compared to 5-6 minutes during the summer peak. However, they argue this minor adjustment fails to address the core issue of year-round mass tourism pressure on local mobility.
Furthermore, TMB defends its scheduling, stating the V19 has “very different demand” depending on the day and season. The company highlights its flexible planning, including deploying eight extra vehicles on weekends and during festivals like La Mercè. Nevertheless, residents remain unconvinced, linking current better frequencies solely to November’s seasonal tourist decline rather than a committed policy change.
Official tourism data reveals the scale of the challenge. According to Barcelona’s 2024 tourist profile report, 68% of visitors went to “points of tourist interest” in July and August, with figures at 40% in September and 64% in October. This sustained pressure means transport solutions cannot be purely seasonal. The community’s struggle reflects a wider city-wide effort to manage tourism’s impact on neighbourhoods.
Additionally, Mayor Jaume Collboni’s administration has presented a mobility improvement plan, which locals find insufficient. Molas urges authorities to look beyond just transport and reconvene a dialogue table. While Collboni has accepted, at ERC’s urging, an 11% tourist flat reduction over two years, Recuperem Park Güell labels this measure “unambitious.” The group’s campaign underscores the ongoing tension between accommodating visitors and preserving residents’ quality of life in one of Barcelona’s most iconic districts.
