The group Recuperem el Park Güell has issued a stark warning to Barcelona City Council, demanding urgent action to address overwhelming visitor numbers and their impact on neighbouring districts.

Residents in the La Salut and Vallcarca neighbourhoods feel they are living on a ‘permanent film set’. Moreover, they face inflated living costs directly linked to the area’s tourist appeal. The situation has been exacerbated by traffic displacement, with the Carretera del Carmel now absorbing taxi and VTC traffic that once congested La Salut.
In response, the platform is taking direct action. The first scheduled Park Güell traffic blockade is set for 13 December. Subsequently, monthly disruptions will continue until the council reconvenes the Park Güell Entities Table, a participatory forum not held during the current administration. The group insists this table is ‘more necessary than ever’ nearly 15 years after its creation.

The platform laments that citizens have not recovered ‘a space that belonged to all Barcelona residents’, which they argue was taken for exclusive tourist business. They are particularly critical of proposals for the Gaudí centenary, viewing them as a superficial attempt to sell community participation that will likely become another tourist attraction.
Additionally, there are complaints about a lack of information regarding future uses for the soon-to-be-expropriated Casa Trias. There is also frustration over the vague timeline for a promised reduction of half a million annual visitors, a measure agreed with ERC. The platform also links its campaign to wider local business concerns about tourism’s impact on community life.
Worker rights form another core grievance. The platform states that BSM, the municipal company, does not recognise the majority trade union COS at Park Güell. Accordingly, it refuses to dialogue over basic health and safety demands. Tired of this ‘disdain’, park workers have announced they will go on strike.
The group’s ultimate demand is clear: the council must immediately convene the Entities Table. This body should include both residents and affected workers. Once established, it must agree on its functions, centre all these demands, and schedule regular meetings to ensure proper participation.
