Park Güell Visitor Reduction Strategy Takes Shape
Republican Left party representatives have confirmed reaching an agreement with Barcelona’s socialist municipal government. Consequently, this arrangement will dramatically decrease tourist pressure on the iconic modernist park. The commitment specifically targets reducing annual visitor figures from the current 4.5 million to 4 million within the current political term.

Elisenda Alamany, the Republican leader in Barcelona City Council, announced the development from the park’s main entrance. She emphasised that this measure is essential for returning the space to local residents. Furthermore, she stated the reduction would translate to 1,365 fewer daily visitors and approximately 130 fewer tourists per hour.
The political leader highlighted her commitment to neighbourhood associations in Gràcia and Horta-Guinardó districts. Accordingly, she asserted that the agreement reflects community demands for tangible tourism management rather than mere complaints. “Park Güell has become another part of the city that has stopped belonging to Barcelona residents and needs to return to them,” Alamany added during her announcement.
The formal proposal will be presented as a motion in the upcoming Economy and Finance Committee meeting. Moreover, the Republican leader confirmed the municipal government has already provided its approval for implementation. This development represents one of the most significant tourism management measures introduced in recent years.
Local residents have long expressed concerns about overcrowding and the impact on their daily lives. Therefore, this agreement signals a potential turning point in balancing tourism benefits with neighbourhood quality of life. The implementation timeline ensures gradual reduction rather than abrupt changes to the local tourism economy.
