Barcelona commuters face significant disruption from the end of September as works at Passeig de Gràcia station will shut access to the L4 line for five months. Starting on 29 September, the closure will allow the installation of a new lift and wider accessibility upgrades.

Passengers heading to L4 will be diverted through the L3 entrances, adding several minutes to the journey. The project also includes a redesign of the station’s vestibule, relocation of the ticket barriers and the introduction of an adapted gate for people with reduced mobility.
Celia Riera, a Generalitat technician, told residents at an information session that closing the vestibule was unavoidable. The disruption is expected to last until Christmas, when works should be complete.
The €5.2 million scheme, launched in January 2024, involves four new lifts across the station. The first—linking L3 platforms with the L4 transfer corridor, was completed nine months ago. Additional lifts for both L3 and L4 are being installed, though they do not require further closures.
The closure of Passeig de Gràcia’s L4 entrance underlines the challenge of modernising Barcelona’s busiest metro hubs while maintaining service. For commuters, the coming months will mean longer walks and patience, but the upgrades promise a more accessible and efficient station in the future.
