Pastisseria Ideal, a historic bakery on Gran de Gràcia in Barcelona's Gràcia district, will close its doors on 31 May after more than a century of operation. The beloved establishment, open since 1919, represents another loss for the city's traditional businesses.
The closure comes as current owners, brothers Miquel Àngel and Lluís Álvarez, face Lluís's retirement. Miquel Àngel stated he does not feel strong enough to continue running the business alone. They are the third generation of the founding family.
Miquel Álvarez Bauló and Maria Solanes Mora started the bakery, originally named "Pastelería y Confitería El Ideal." For over 100 years, it has served artisanal sweets, including its famous chuchos, while maintaining its original aesthetic.
Owners have tried to find a buyer to take over the business in recent months. However, they have not received any concrete proposals so far, according to reports in various media outlets. They still hope someone will take charge before the scheduled closure date.
A Century of Sweet Tradition
The Pastisseria Ideal has maintained its original aesthetic and spirit since 1919. It became a cherished part of daily life for many Gràcia residents. Its famous chuchos, a fried pastry often filled with cream, were a particular favourite among customers.
Gràcia's Vanishing Traditional Shops
The potential closure adds to a growing list of "lifelong" businesses disappearing from Gràcia. This trend impacts the district's unique character. Residents and tourists value its independent spirit and traditional commerce. Many residents express concern about the loss of local identity as these historic establishments vanish.
Gràcia has seen several other centenarian businesses close recently. Forn Santa Clara, a bakery, shut down after eight decades. Its owners could not afford a monthly rent increase to 3,000 euros.
Other long-standing shops in the district have also announced closures. These include Mercería Tarragona, a haberdashery open since 1917. Calçats Conesa, a shoe shop founded in 1880, also closed. Ferretería Camps, a hardware store operating since 1934, also shut its doors.
The closure of Pastisseria Ideal highlights the challenges faced by small, family-run businesses in Barcelona. Residents and visitors will miss its traditional pastries and historic charm. The community awaits any last-minute news regarding a potential takeover.
