The People We Meet on Vacation film is now streaming on Netflix. This highly anticipated adaptation brings Emily Henry’s bestselling novel to screens worldwide. Furthermore, the romantic comedy stars Tom Blyth and Emily Bader as the lead characters. However, the production relocates the story’s central holiday from California to the picturesque streets of Barcelona and the Costa Brava.
Directed by Brett Haley, known for films such as The Hero and Hearts Beat Loud, the movie follows a classic romantic trope. It focuses on two lifelong best friends, Poppy and Alex. Despite living in different cities, they have spent a portion of their summer holiday together every year for a decade. Therefore, they must now confront whether their friendship could be something more.

People We Meet on Vacation Film: From California to Catalonia
In a significant departure from the source material, the film’s production team swapped the novel’s Palm Springs setting for the capital of Catalonia. Consequently, this change provides a fresh European backdrop for Poppy and Alex’s will-they-won’t-they story.
Filming took place in several well-known locations across the region. For instance, viewers can spot iconic Barcelona cityscapes alongside beautiful coastal spots on the Costa Brava. These include Cala Boadella and the Santa Clotilde Gardens. Meanwhile, the cast, particularly Emily Bader, shared glimpses of the Spanish filming locations with fans on social media during production. This choice continues a long tradition of using Barcelona’s historic filming locations in major productions.
People We Meet on Vacation Film Cast and Plot
The story centres on Poppy (Emily Bader), a free-spirited travel journalist, and the more reserved Alex (Tom Blyth). As Netflix describes it: “After many vacations together, these very different friends wonder if they will be the perfect couple.” The film explores their complex relationship and the romantic feelings that emerge after years of friendship.
This adaptation is the first of Emily Henry’s novels to be brought to the screen. However, it will not be the last. According to reports, several of the author’s other bestselling books are also in development. These include Book Lovers, Beach Read, and Happy Place. In addition, the decision to film in Catalonia aligns with Netflix’s recent expansion of Catalan-language content. You can watch the official trailer on Netflix’s YouTube channel.
