Gerardo Pisarello, a Comuns candidate for Barcelona mayor, criticised Mayor Jaume Collboni for his absence from a pro-Palestine demonstration. The protest took place on Sunday, 28 April, in Plaça Universitat, a prominent public square in central Barcelona.

The platform Aturem la Guerra organised the demonstration. Protesters gathered under the slogan, 'Against war, let's overturn rearmament. NATO no. Enough complicity with Israel.' Mr Pisarello spoke to the press before the event. He expressed his disappointment regarding Mr Collboni's non-attendance, noting the significance of the cause.

Pisarello Calls for Firmer Stance

Mr Pisarello stated, "It is very good to hold progressive summits, it is very good to meet with progressive leaders, but this must have a practical consequence, which is to be much firmer with Netanyahu or with Trump." He emphasised the need for political leaders to translate their progressive values into concrete actions on international issues, rather than just rhetoric.

He also highlighted the importance of social policies in opposing conflict. "We must show the population that we are a determined society," Mr Pisarello said. He continued, "At a time when they ask us for more weapons, we must defend more housing and social rights for working people." He added, "This includes more social rights for young people. This approach is the most consistent way to be against war and defend a culture of peace." This statement connects international policy with the daily lives and welfare of Barcelona's residents.

Barcelona's Role in Peace Movements

Mr Pisarello praised Barcelona's historical role in peace activism. He described the city as "a city against war, a city defending a culture of peace." Plaça Universitat, a central public square, often hosts significant demonstrations and social gatherings. The Comuns political party, which Mr Pisarello represents, frequently participates in such social movements. They advocate for peace and social justice both locally and internationally.

Mr Pisarello's comments highlight ongoing political debate within Barcelona's City Council regarding international conflicts. His criticism puts pressure on Mayor Collboni. This pressure aims to align the city's actions more closely with its stated progressive values. The public challenge underscores differing approaches among Barcelona's political factions on global issues.
