Major Plaça de Sants station accessibility works have officially begun on Barcelona Metro’s L5 line. The Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition confirmed on Tuesday that the €15.2 million project is now underway. This initiative marks a significant step towards adapting the network for passengers with reduced mobility.
Scope of the Plaça de Sants station accessibility renovations
This project represents the first phase of a broader plan to adapt the interchange between lines L1 and L5. The current works are comprehensive, focusing on structural changes to ensure barrier-free access from street level to the platforms.

The primary upgrades include:
- New lobby construction: The existing lobby will be expanded to create a more spacious entrance hall.
- Installation of lifts: Three new lifts will be constructed to connect different levels of the station.
- Emergency exits: Two new emergency exits will be built directly from the platforms.
- Improved access: The entrance from Carrer de Joan Güell will be expanded, along with the staircases connecting the lobby to the pre-platform level.
Platform and corridor upgrades for accessibility
Beyond the structural expansions, the project involves specific modifications designed to assist passengers with visual or physical impairments. Platforms will be raised to eliminate the vertical gap between the station floor and the metro carriages. This change facilitates easier boarding.
Additionally, tactile guidance paths will be installed throughout the station to assist visually impaired users. The ticket barriers will also be replaced with models featuring wider passageways to accommodate wheelchairs and prams. Meanwhile, a section of the corridor connecting the L1 and L5 lines is also set to be adapted during this phase, similar to the recent renaming of another station on the L5 line.
Impact of the works on Plaça de Sants square
The scale of the construction will require the occupation of the entire interior space of Plaça de Sants while works are in progress. Therefore, the Department and the Barcelona City Council are currently drafting a project to define the future urbanisation of the square. This plan will be implemented once the underground infrastructure works are complete.
