In Poblenou, residents are pushing back against a reurbanisation plan for the Jardí de les Papallones, the community garden in Passatge de Trullàs. They say the project could change the space so much that it loses the neighbourhood spirit they have built there over more than a decade.
Local volunteers turned the passage into a green space more than 10 years ago. Also known as the Butterfly Garden, it includes planting, a children’s play area and seating, and it has been maintained through an informal agreement with the Ajuntament.
The planned works would open the passage laterally towards Carrer de Badajoz and Passatge d'Iglesias. Residents say the design includes too much asphalt and too little vegetation, and they fear it will make the area feel more like a route through the block than a place to stay.
Gabriela Guaimare Olivo, a garden volunteer, said, “We fear that when the works begin it will become a place to pile up material.” She added, “All our work here over so many years will be lost.” She also said, “They will copy and paste from other areas of Poblenou.”
The group wants the project to include a storage module for gardening work, a water point and an electrical connection. They also want a free space for events and gates to protect the passage at night, as happens now. Residents say these details matter because they help keep the garden active, usable and cared for.
Users of the Jardí de les Papallones have submitted formal objections and asked for a meeting with the district. The district has said it will listen to their concerns. For more on local neighbourhood issues, see our Community coverage and Sport updates.
