Barcelona ATM scam tactics have been disrupted by a major police operation in the city.

The Mossos d’Esquadra have arrested four individuals, including one minor, for allegedly purchasing stolen mobile phones to access confidential data and commit bank fraud at cash machines.

How The Barcelona ATM Scam Operated

The investigation, part of the broader ‘Plan Kanpai’ initiative to combat repeat offenders across Catalonia, led to the recovery of around thirty mobile phones.

Consequently, ten of these devices were confirmed as stolen from muggings and violent robberies. The three adult men arrested, aged between 21 and 61 and all members of the same family, reportedly bought the stolen phones on the black market.

They then extracted personal data to facilitate bank fraud, primarily by operating at ATMs. Furthermore, during a search of a property in Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella district, police seized the 31 phones. Officers have already returned four devices to their owners and are working to identify the rest, which are all high-end models.

Additionally, authorities confiscated 11 SIM cards of allegedly illicit origin, believed to have been used to unlock the stolen phones. The haul also included €7,290 in cash, a laptop, and clothing used to disguise themselves while committing the ATM fraud.

Ongoing Investigation And Wider Context

The operation remains open to clarify ownership of the remaining phones and determine if the group is linked to other crimes. Therefore, further arrests have not been ruled out. This case highlights a sophisticated method of financial crime evolving in urban centres.

Meanwhile, it follows other recent police actions targeting violent crime in the city, such as the arrest of a man for a stabbing attack in Trinitat Vella. The successful bust also comes as residents contend with broader economic pressures, including soaring inflation affecting energy bills.

According to the official report from El Periódico, the police action demonstrates a focused effort to tackle complex, technology-enabled fraud. The Barcelona ATM scam ring’s dismantling serves as a warning to other would-be offenders and offers some reassurance to the public.
