A French national faces drug trafficking charges after a highly trained police dog detected nearly fifteen kilograms of hashish in a suitcase during a routine inspection at the La Jonquera border crossing. The incident occurred on Monday, 16 February. The man attempted to distance himself from the luggage on a long-distance bus travelling from Barcelona to France.

The arrest took place at a service area in La Jonquera, a municipality in Catalonia’s Alt Empordà comarca. This area serves as one of the most significant land border crossings between Spain and France. Officers from the Guardia Civil were conducting a standard check on a commercial bus service bound for Rennes, the capital of Brittany in northwestern France.
A Canine Officer’s Key Discovery
During the inspection of the bus’s luggage compartment, a canine unit dog suddenly stopped and remained still in front of a specific suitcase. This behaviour, known as ‘marking’, alerted its handlers to the potential presence of narcotics inside. Following protocol, officers instructed all passengers to disembark and claim their respective bags to identify the owner of the suspicious luggage.
As passengers collected their belongings, one suitcase remained unclaimed. According to a report by Catalan news outlet El Caso, this immediately heightened suspicions. Authorities note that smugglers often abandon drug-laden luggage when faced with a police presence, hoping to avoid capture.
Undeterred, the Guardia Civil launched an immediate investigation to identify the owner. By reviewing security camera footage and interviewing bus drivers, officers successfully linked the abandoned suitcase to a 31-year-old male passenger of French nationality.
Investigation Continues into Smuggling Route
Upon opening the case, officers discovered the significant quantity of hashish, a potent cannabis resin. Police promptly arrested the man as the alleged perpetrator of a drug trafficking offence. They have since handed him over to judicial authorities for further proceedings.
While this arrest represents a successful interception, the Guardia Civil’s investigation continues. Investigators are now focused on determining the origin of the narcotics and their intended final destination within the distribution network. This work is crucial for dismantling larger criminal organisations that use Catalonia as a key transit point for smuggling drugs into the rest of Europe.
The La Jonquera crossing is a frequent chokepoint for such illicit activities. The use of commercial buses is a recurring theme, mirroring a recent case at the same location where authorities seized 26kg of methamphetamine from a passenger. Furthermore, hashish trafficking remains a persistent issue in the region, with recent arrests including a truck driver caught with over 6kg of the substance in Vic.
