National Police seized 1,598 packs of smuggled cigarettes from a foreign passenger at Barcelona’s Estació del Nord bus station. The person had just flown in from Turkey and was trying to catch a bus to Paris when officers stopped them on 22 September.

Officers identified a foreign couple who’d entered Spain through Barcelona Airport that same morning. When questioned separately about their trip, both acted nervous and gave contradictory answers. This raised red flags, so police searched their luggage.
Both suitcases contained the cigarette packs, none of which had any tax stamps or fiscal seals. The passengers couldn’t justify where they’d got them from, so police proposed sanctions to the Customs and Special Taxes department of Barcelona’s Tax Agency.
The confiscated tobacco lacked all required fiscal documentation, confirming it was contraband. Meanwhile, authorities processed the corresponding sanction proposals with the relevant tax bodies. The Estació del Nord remains a key checkpoint for cross-border smuggling attempts due to its role as a major bus terminal connecting Spain with the rest of Europe.
