Residents were evacuated from a block on carrer de l’El·lipse in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat early on Monday after a blaze involving polystyrene sheets filled the stairwell with smoke. The emergency service 112 took the first call at 6.47am yesterday (8th September); three fire crews from the Bombers de la Generalitat were dispatched and set about ventilating the building.

According to firefighters, smoke had spread through the common areas and into several flats, prompting a precautionary evacuation. Once the stairwell was cleared and checks completed, neighbours were allowed back into their homes.
The Catalan medical emergency service (SEM) sent three ambulances. Four people were taken to Hospital Moisès Broggi in Sant Joan Despí for assessment following exposure to smoke.
Officials said the incident originated with stored polystyrene (porexpan) sheets, which generated heavy smoke when ignited. Firefighters secured the area and reminded residents to keep combustible materials away from ignition sources in communal spaces.
