Pope Leo XIV is expected to visit Barcelona this coming June for a historic two-day trip. The pontiff will officiate the completion of the Sagrada Família’s highest pinnacle. According to municipal sources confirmed by local media, the visit will take place on June 9 and 10. This forms part of a wider official tour of Spain that includes Madrid and the Canary Islands.
The timing of the Pope Leo XIV Barcelona visit is deeply symbolic. His presence is scheduled to coincide with the inauguration of the Jesus Christ tower at the Sagrada Família. This central and tallest spire of the basilica aligns precisely with the centenary of the death of architect Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí died in Barcelona on June 10, 1926.

Historic Itinerary for the Pope Leo XIV Barcelona Visit
While the Holy See has not yet officially released the final agenda, the schedule outlined by sources suggests the Pontiff will spend approximately 35 hours in the Catalan capital. On Tuesday, June 9, he is expected to gather the faithful at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Montjuïc. It remains unconfirmed whether this event will be a formal mass or a broader, open gathering.

The following day, Wednesday, June 10, Leo XIV will attend the ceremonial ‘re-inauguration’ of the Sagrada Família. This event marks the structural completion of the basilica’s vertical ascent. Therefore, it realises Gaudí’s vision a century after his passing.
Xavier Martínez, the Director General of the basilica, expressed confidence regarding the visit earlier this week. "Everything seems to indicate that the Holy Father is going to come to visit Barcelona and will be able to inaugurate and bless the Jesus Christ Tower," he stated.
The Tallest Church in the World
The inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ represents the culmination of generations of construction. Once the final element is in place, the basilica will reach a maximum height of 172.5 metres. Consequently, it will become the tallest church globally. Notably, Gaudí specifically designed the church to remain slightly lower than the nearby Montjuïc mountain (177 metres). He believed that human creation should not exceed the work of God.
Construction is currently in its final stages. Only the upper arm of the crowning cross remains to be placed. The cross itself is a monumental structure:
- Dimensions: 17 metres high and 13.5 metres wide.
- Weight: Each arm weighs approximately 12.8 tonnes.
- Materials: Clad in glass and white glazed ceramic.
- Interior: The upper arm will house a sculpture of the ‘Lamb of God’ by Italian artist Andrea Mastrovito.
Diplomatic Preparations for the Visit
The Pope Leo XIV Barcelona visit follows significant diplomatic groundwork. Last October, the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, met with the Pope at the Vatican to extend an invitation for the tower’s completion. Meanwhile, Cardinal Archbishop of Barcelona, Juan José Omella, has also been in dialogue with the Pontiff. Their discussions aim to determine how best to integrate the Barcelona leg into the wider Spanish tour.
This will be the first papal visit to the city since Benedict XVI consecrated the temple on November 7, 2010.
