Barcelona’s port has installed a new drone security system that can launch within minutes to respond to emergencies anywhere in the facility. The automated system, known as a drone-in-a-box, stays charged and ready to fly at a moment’s notice.

The setup works through the port’s 5G network, which means the Port Police Control Centre can send the drone to any location remotely. Meanwhile, the system can handle inspections of infrastructure, create high-precision aerial maps, and stream live video from areas where fixed cameras can’t reach.

Bernat Baró, the port’s Corporate Security Director, explained that the drone adds a new dimension to their security operations. Right now, they can have eyes in the sky at any point across the port within minutes, which improves safety for everyone working there.

The DJI Dock 3 device sits in a physical station that shelters and charges the drone when it’s not flying. However, when needed, it can take off and land remotely without anyone physically operating it on site. The port is testing the system with tech company Instop as part of their broader digitalisation and security strategy.
