The Barcelona PP has started a campaign demanding the return of the traditional nativity scene to Plaça Sant Jaume, calling it an important part of the city’s Christmas heritage. Daniel Sirera, the PP’s municipal group president, says the nativity scene represents more than just religion, it’s cultural, artistic and social too.

“The nativity scene symbolises the birth of Jesus and messages of peace and fraternity that inspire millions worldwide,” Sirera explained. He also highlighted how it serves as an educational tool and meeting point for thousands of families, associations and schools across Barcelona.

Sirera urged Mayor Jaume Collboni to stand firm in defending local traditions and culture. “What Barcelona doesn’t need is people who are bothered by seeing the nativity scene at Sant Jaume,” he added. The PP criticised recent years of what they call attempts to sideline or replace the traditional display with installations that have nothing to do with the city’s heritage.

Last year, the council installed a giant illuminated star at Plaça Sant Jaume instead of the traditional nativity scene. However, they didn’t abandon the nativity completely, displaying a large maritime-themed one in the City Hall’s carriage courtyard. Before that, the traditional nativity scene was set up annually at the Marés Museum near the cathedral, close to Plaça Sant Jaume.

The PP is now collecting support from residents and cultural groups to present a formal demand to the city council for bringing back the traditional nativity scene to Plaça Sant Jaume.
