Barcelona burka ban proposals have ignited fierce political debate after the Popular Party called for prohibiting full-face veils in public spaces.

Municipal leader Daniel Sirera announced the controversial measure, arguing it’s necessary for security reasons and to protect women’s dignity.
The proposal, however, was already rejected last week by Junts, ERC, Comuns and CUP parties in the city council.
Barcelona Burka Ban Arguments Clash Over Integration
Sirera launched the campaign in Raval, describing it as Barcelona’s second-most foreign-populated neighbourhood. He emphasised that newcomers must adapt to local norms, particularly regarding gender equality. Furthermore, the PP leader insisted the measure represents support for orderly immigration rather than opposition to it.
The proposal includes additional requirements for residency applications. Consequently, migrants could face unfavourable integration reports if they violate civic ordinances or cannot demonstrate employment. Therefore, the party wants to add a ‘civic attitude’ assessment to existing criteria.
According to recent demographic data, Barcelona’s foreign-born population has reached record levels. Sirera specifically chose Raval for the campaign launch because university studies indicate 53% of its residents are foreign-born. Meanwhile, the neighbouring Gothic quarter records 67% foreign residents.
The PP leader stated the party wants immigrants who contribute value to Barcelona society. Additionally, he emphasised the importance of employment and integration willingness. However, critics argue such measures could alienate religious communities and undermine social cohesion.
This Barcelona burka ban proposal follows similar debates across Europe about religious symbols in public life. The political battle now moves to broader discussions about immigration policy and cultural integration in one of Spain’s most diverse cities.
