Around 50 pro-Palestine activists spent the night in tents at Plaça de les Drassanes, commonly known as Plaça de la Carbonera, demanding an end to what they call genocide in Palestine. The camp went up after Thursday evening’s protest, which brought over 15,000 people to the area between the World Trade Centre and Avinguda Paral·lel.

Activist spokeswoman Judit Piñol told the Catalan News Agency they slept “very peacefully” and made clear the camp is indefinite. The activists won’t budge until there’s a “real, effective and immediate” break in commercial relations with the Israeli government. They’re also calling for an end to the maritime blockade of Gaza and the release of Global Sumud Flotilla activists detained by Israel after the humanitarian mission was stormed.

Meanwhile, organisers are demanding a total arms embargo on Israel and a complete break in diplomatic, cultural and sporting ties with Tel Aviv. “We’ll leave the day governments do their job. It’s as simple as that”, Piñol said.

At least two more mobilisations are planned for Friday, one in the morning and another in the afternoon, both ending at Plaça de la Carbonera. The CGT union has called an education strike, urging all teaching and educational staff from schools, institutes, universities and leisure centres to join. The Students’ Union of the Catalan Countries had already announced a student strike. A Saturday demonstration is set to leave from Jardinets de Gràcia at midday, coinciding with similar protests worldwide.
