A Quatre Camins prison official has been arrested for smuggling drugs into the facility. The arrest, which occurred on Sunday, 8 February, followed a months-long investigation by internal security forces. This incident highlights significant security concerns at the La Roca del Vallès penitentiary.

Joint Operation Stops Smuggling Attempt

The operation was executed around 06:30 on Sunday morning by the prison’s Internal Security Unit (USI), supported by the Penitentiary Unit of the Mossos d’Esquadra. According to reports, the official was intercepted as he arrived for his shift. Investigators discovered illegal substances in his possession which were allegedly intended for distribution within the prison.

The Department of Justice confirmed the arrest. However, they declined to provide further specific details at this stage. The suspect, a long-serving employee at the facility, is expected to appear before a duty judge in Granollers shortly.

Inmates Placed in Isolation

Following the arrest, prison authorities have taken immediate internal measures. Several inmates have been placed in isolation while investigators determine their potential involvement in the smuggling ring. Sources indicate that many of the isolated individuals are linked to the La Mina area in Sant Adrià.

One primary line of inquiry is establishing whether the official was operating independently for profit. Alternatively, he may have been coerced or extorted by an organised group inside the prison. The USI had been discreetly monitoring the employee for several months. They suspected him of introducing both narcotics and mobile phones—contraband that poses significant security challenges in Catalan prisons.

Security Protocols Under Scrutiny

To prevent unrest following the operation, the Mossos d’Esquadra deployed additional officers from the Regional Operational Resources Area (ARRO). Their task was to secure the prison’s perimeter.

This incident is not an isolated case within the region’s penal system. Union sources and staff at Quatre Camins have voiced concerns regarding a recent decline in the strictness of entry controls. Therefore, calls have been made for reinforced surveillance mechanisms. These measures would prevent staff from being compromised and stop illicit goods from breaching prison walls.

The case remains under judicial secrecy as the investigation proceeds.
