Rail passengers travelling through Badalona face significant disruptions today. The R1 Rodalies single track operation is now in effect between Badalona and Montgat. Consequently, inspections revealed worsening storm damage to the coastal railway infrastructure.

Storm Damage to Coastal Tracks

The structural issues stem from the aftermath of Storm Harry. This storm battered the Catalan coast earlier this week with waves reaching heights of up to six metres. While initial checks suggested the line was secure, fresh inspections conducted by Adif on Thursday night identified an “incident” near La Barca Maria beach. Therefore, this event highlights the significant impact caused by the severe damage to Barcelona’s coastline from Storm Harry.

According to sources from Adif, the infrastructure manager, the situation has evolved rapidly. “As the hours passed, the affected area has shifted and expanded,” they confirmed. Meanwhile, intense wave action has severely eroded the promenade and the shoreline. This has compromised the area adjacent to the tracks. In response, engineering teams have begun reinforcing the infrastructure with rockfill. Their goal is to stabilise the ground and normalise the situation as quickly as possible.

Reduced Service Frequency on the R1 Rodalies Single Track

Due to the single-track operation, Renfe has restricted circulation on the R1 line to two trains per hour in each direction. This reduction follows two days of service stoppages earlier in the week. Furthermore, these latest disruptions come shortly after the recent restoration of Rodalies service after a 48-hour shutdown across the network.

Antonio Carmona, a spokesperson for Renfe Catalunya, expressed hope that the issue could be resolved throughout Friday. The objective is to restore double-track circulation and return the Maresme line to its normal frequency. In addition, repair work is continuing into the afternoon. An exploratory engine is scheduled to run over the affected track to determine if it is safe to reopen fully.

Safety Warnings Validated

The deterioration of the track bed appears to validate earlier concerns raised by local officials. On Tuesday, Xavier Garcia Albiol, the mayor of Badalona, warned that the damage to the promenade posed a risk to train safety. The beaches of Cristall and La Barca Maria were practically swallowed by the sea.

“I am not a technician, not at all, but this is a risky situation, what I see scares me,” Albiol stated at the time. Although Adif initially denied any immediate safety threat on Tuesday, the subsequent expansion of the damage zone necessitated the current preventative measures. However, such infrastructure vulnerabilities are often linked to the issue of chronic underinvestment in Catalonia’s railway infrastructure.
