Barcelona’s biggest festival, La Mercè, opened this year with the presentation of the Barceloní and Barcelonina of the Year awards, hosted by El Periódico. The honours went to Ramon Agenjo and Sara Puig, two figures recognised for their contributions to the cultural and civic life of the city.

Sara Puig, president of the Fundació Joan Miró, has been instrumental in strengthening the museum’s role on both a local and international level. Under her leadership, the institution has expanded its cultural impact and cemented its place as one of Barcelona’s most significant artistic voices.

Ramon Agenjo, an executive at Damm, has long been involved in initiatives that support culture, civic engagement and economic progress. His backing of cultural projects and community development has made him a key figure in shaping the city’s identity.

Now in its second year, the awards celebrate individuals who help define and improve Barcelona across civic, cultural, scientific and social fields. By placing the gala at the heart of La Mercè, the city underscores the importance of recognising those who contribute to its ongoing transformation.
