Catalonia train punctuality has become a political flashpoint after former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont highlighted stark disparities in Renfe’s September performance data.

The figures reveal significant differences between Madrid and Barcelona’s commuter rail services, sparking renewed debate about infrastructure investment priorities.
Catalonia Train Punctuality Gap Sparks Political Response
According to the Renfe statistics published by Europa Press, Madrid’s commuter trains achieved 70.7% punctuality in September. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s services managed only 47.7% reliability during the same period. Furthermore, the average delay in Madrid stood at 11.1 minutes compared to Barcelona’s 20.3 minutes.

Puigdemont described the figures as demonstrating “the same pattern that follows state investments.” He argued that “a citizen of Madrid not only enjoys many more state investments but, if they use the train, has more chances of arriving, and arriving on time, than a Catalan.” The political leader consequently framed the issue as part of broader concerns about regional infrastructure funding.
The punctuality data emerges amid broader discussions about Catalonia’s economic landscape. Recent reports indicate Catalonia’s economy continues to show strong growth, reaching 2.9% in 2025. However, infrastructure challenges remain a persistent concern for residents and businesses alike.
Transport infrastructure represents just one aspect of Barcelona’s ongoing development challenges. The city continues to navigate complex urban planning decisions, as evidenced by recent major tram works at Glories that began this month. These projects aim to improve connectivity but inevitably cause temporary disruption to services.
Puigdemont concluded that “the dependence on Spain has unsustainable costs in people’s daily lives,” citing “more poverty, fewer services, less freedom” as consequences. The Catalonia train punctuality debate therefore reflects wider political tensions while highlighting practical concerns for daily commuters across the region.
