Renfe Catalonia services demonstrated significant improvement during October 2025, according to newly released performance data from the national rail operator.

The monthly punctuality report reveals that Rodalies commuter trains carried 9.3 million passengers last month – an increase of 600,000 compared to September – despite ongoing service disruptions affecting several key routes.

Renfe Catalonia Services Achieve Record Train Numbers

October marked the busiest month of the year for Rodalies operations, with Renfe scheduling 21,156 trains throughout the 31-day period.

This represents 474 additional services compared to the previous month, indicating a substantial expansion of capacity. Furthermore, the operator recorded its best annual performance for average delay times at final destinations, with trains arriving just 0.2 minutes behind schedule on average.

The improved performance comes despite significant challenges, including the complete suspension of the R3 line between Barcelona and La Garriga for track duplication works. According to Renfe’s assessment, approximately 20% of the R3’s 16,000 regular users have abandoned the railway service in favour of alternative transport options. However, this decline has been more than offset by increased usage across the wider network.

Service reliability showed notable improvement compared to September. Consequently, only 634 trains were ultimately cancelled during October, substantially fewer than the 807 cancellations recorded the previous month. Additionally, punctuality at final destinations reached 99.3%, meaning only 0.7% of services arrived late – a significant enhancement from September’s 5% delay rate.

The operator’s increased transparency initiative, which began in September, now includes detailed breakdowns of delay causes. The data reveals that external factors account for approximately 70% of all delay minutes, while Renfe’s own operational issues contribute to the remaining 30%. These external causes include infrastructure management, other operators, and unforeseen circumstances such as fires and adverse weather conditions.

While half of all trains failed to meet their scheduled station arrival times, most managed to recover lost time during journeys. Nevertheless, approximately 100 services – representing 4% of all scheduled trains – arrived more than 15 minutes late. The average delay for these specifically affected trains stood at 18.3 minutes, representing the third-best performance figure recorded throughout 2025.

This performance improvement follows recent positive developments in Barcelona’s public transport sector, where labour agreements have helped stabilise services. The data suggests that Renfe’s operational adjustments and increased scheduling are yielding measurable benefits for Catalonia’s commuting public, even as major infrastructure works continue to affect certain routes.
