Renfe has launched a real-time train tracker to reduce passenger uncertainty across Catalonia.
The new web tool shows the exact location of all Rodalies commuter trains, aiming to end the frustration of waiting on platforms without information.
Available at tiempo-real.renfe.com, the map displays every station and train in the network.

Consequently, passengers can click on any train to see its route, current or last stop, and the exact minutes and seconds until its next arrival. This development responds directly to long-standing demands from user platforms.
Real-Time Train Tracker Uses Colour-Coded System
The real-time train tracker uses a simple colour system to indicate delays. A green dot means a train is on time, while orange signals a delay of up to five minutes. Furthermore, a red dot indicates a wait exceeding ten minutes, with some trains showing delays over an hour.
Renfe states the data updates every thirty seconds. Additionally, the operator is providing this information via an “Open Data” domain. Therefore, other platforms and route planners, like Google Maps, can integrate it into their services.
This transparency initiative follows Renfe’s recent monthly publication of punctuality statistics. However, user groups note the current information remains incomplete. The platform does not yet include Regional or Media Distancia services, which often have longer waits between trains.
A spokesperson for the campaign group Dignitat a les Vies confirmed they hope Regional trains will be added soon. Meanwhile, Renfe has indicated plans to incorporate the remaining services within the next year.
The launch addresses a critical gap, as unreliable information previously led passengers to develop their own solutions. For instance, applications like ‘Rodalinets’ and Puntual.cat emerged from user initiatives to fill the void.
Technical discrepancies between data in Madrid and Catalonia still need resolving. Accordingly, campaigners plan to meet with Renfe technicians to ensure the real-time train tracker provides fully reliable information for all passengers moving forward.
