Renfe Plaça Catalunya escalators are back in partial operation following a major renewal project.
The rail operator has successfully returned two of the station’s four key escalators to service, marking the first phase of a comprehensive refurbishment programme aimed at improving accessibility at one of Barcelona’s busiest transport hubs.
The work, which began earlier this year, is being conducted in two distinct phases to minimise disruption for the hundreds of thousands of passengers who use the Rodalies station daily.

One ascending and one descending escalator are now operational, with the remaining two units scheduled for renovation starting in January.
Renfe Plaça Catalunya Escalators Part Of Broader Accessibility Push
This specific project forms part of a much wider €8.5 million contract for lift and escalator maintenance and modernisation across Catalonia. Consequently, Renfe formalised this agreement with TKE Elevadores España SLU in February. Furthermore, €4.5 million of this budget is dedicated to corrective maintenance and upgrades for approximately 90 lifts and over 40 escalators throughout the Cercanías network.
The overarching goal is to enhance both accessibility and passenger comfort. Meanwhile, the phased approach at Plaça Catalunya ensures continuous service remains available. The company maintains that all four escalators should be fully operational before 2026, adhering to their original timeline.
Improving station infrastructure is a persistent challenge for transport authorities. For instance, similar efforts to enhance public spaces and housing are underway elsewhere in the city, as seen in the Barcelona Ciutat Vella housing rehabilitation plan. Additionally, transport disruptions can have significant knock-on effects, much like the recent Barcelona tram strike which cut service to 40% of normal capacity.
According to the official statement from Renfe, the company is committed to this ongoing modernisation. Therefore, passengers can expect further improvements as the second phase commences next month. The renewal of the Renfe Plaça Catalunya escalators represents a tangible step forward in upgrading the region’s critical transport infrastructure.
