Starting 8 September 2025Renfe will replace its Avlo single-class low-cost trains on the Madrid–Barcelona high-speed line with multi-class AVE S-103 trains, maintaining current frequency and schedules at competitive prices. Customers holding Avlo tickets for travel beyond 7 September will be transferred to AVE services under the same conditions.

Renfe AVE / RENFE

The decision follows the withdrawal of Avlo’s Talgo Avril S-106 units due to detected cracks in their motor bogie frames. Renfe highlighted that the AVE offers better alignment with the route’s needs—particularly for corporate and frequent business travellers—and includes enhanced comfort with wider seats and more spacious interiors.

AVE’s services bring back amenities previously absent on Avlo, such as cafeteria services, a quiet coach, and premium offerings like access to club lounges.
