Train graffiti cleanup costs have reached a staggering €6.2 million for Renfe in Catalonia this year.
The state-owned railway operator has revealed the immense financial and operational burden caused by vandalism, with over 48,500 square metres cleaned from trains by the end of October.
This expenditure covers both direct cleaning and the significant indirect costs of service disruption.

Consequently, the company reported 822 separate acts of vandalism, which resulted in 590 days of trains being taken out of service. These immobilisations, meanwhile, have directly caused numerous delays and cancellations across the network, affecting thousands of passengers.
Renfe Implements Major Security Overhaul
Renfe states that the number of incursions has reduced compared to last year. This improvement is attributed to a reinforced security strategy focused on critical points of the rail network. The measures form part of an Urgent Measures Plan, coordinated with the Mossos d’Esquadra, Adif, and the Generalitat.
Furthermore, Renfe’s total investment in security across Catalonia now exceeds €20 million. The company is actively working to establish closer collaboration protocols with police forces. Additionally, it plans to incorporate public awareness campaigns about the consequences of vandalism and increase the planned presence of Mossos officers in stations.
The technological fight against graffiti has also intensified. Renfe has deployed video analytics cameras, increased the number of security guards, and expanded surveillance using drones and other new technologies. The goal is to deter vandals and identify perpetrators more efficiently.
The scale of the problem highlights ongoing challenges in urban security and public property maintenance. This issue of public order and vandalism is not isolated to transport hubs, as seen in other recent incidents where authorities have had to clear public spaces. The financial drain of €6.2 million also raises questions about resource allocation, especially when the city is managing other major infrastructure changes, such as reshaping roads for new motorcycle zones.
