Renfe maintenance investment will transform Catalonia’s rail network with €100 million dedicated to new facilities across the region.

The Spanish rail operator’s ambitious plan aims to slash train immobilisation time by 30% through strategic infrastructure improvements and expanded workshop capacity.

Renfe Maintenance Investment Drives Service Improvements

The comprehensive strategy focuses on three key pillars: railway infrastructure renewal, introduction of 110 new trains, and construction of modern maintenance facilities.

Furthermore, the investment will create a more reliable service for Rodalies and Regionals passengers across Catalonia. The company plans to build four new workshops initially, with potential for six additional facilities requiring up to €215 million more investment over the next five years.

According to Renfe spokesperson Antonio Carmona, “We must expand our industrial capacity in workshops and adapt to new maintenance requirements across different facilities in Catalonia.” The approach represents a significant shift toward decentralised maintenance operations, bringing services closer to where trains actually operate.

New workshops in Ripoll and Manresa will enter service between 2026 and 2029, while existing facilities in Vilanova i la Geltrú and Sant Andreu Comtal will undergo substantial expansion and modernisation. Consequently, each convoy will have an assigned maintenance centre, streamlining operations and reducing transit times for technical interventions.

The maintenance improvements coincide with Barcelona’s broader transport infrastructure upgrades happening across the region. This coordinated approach ensures passengers benefit from multiple service enhancements simultaneously.

Renfe currently employs 742 workers across its maintenance facilities, with numbers expected to increase by 10% as new workshops come online. The expansion will also generate additional indirect employment and economic activity throughout Catalonia, providing a welcome boost to local communities.

The Ripoll workshop, scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2026, will maintain 32 trains on a rotating basis and can simultaneously service four 100-metre trains. Meanwhile, the Vilanova i la Geltrú expansion, costing approximately €20 million, will be ready next year to accommodate longer trains.

Six additional locations are under evaluation for future workshops, including Mataró, Granollers, Blanes, Sant Vicenç de Calders, Sant Celoni and Sant Feliu de Buixalleu. However, Renfe will prioritise projects that offer the greatest value to the network while being technically feasible and able to secure necessary administrative approvals.

The maintenance strategy aligns with Catalonia’s position as an innovation leader in Spain, demonstrating how strategic infrastructure investment can drive service improvements. The new facilities will handle preventive maintenance, periodic reviews, and repair of trains with technical issues, while also addressing vandalism-related damage that frequently takes units out of service.

With the first new trains from Alstom and CAF expected to arrive early next year, the timing of this Renfe maintenance investment couldn’t be more crucial. The modernised workshop network will ensure these new units receive optimal care from day one, maximising their availability and reliability for passengers across Catalonia.
