A prolific thief with more than 100 previous arrests was apprehended by the Guàrdia Urbana in the early hours of Monday morning after robbing a clothing store in Barcelona’s Sant Andreu district. In a striking detail, the man was on temporary prison release at the time of the offence.

The incident occurred at approximately 1 a.m. at the ‘Moda re-‘ shop on Carrer Gran de Sant Andreu. The suspect allegedly forced the security shutter to gain entry before making off with the entire cash register. According to sources within the Guàrdia Urbana de Barcelona, the city’s municipal police force, the man was intoxicated and attempted a clumsy escape on foot, still clutching the stolen till.

The store, part of a social enterprise run by the charity Cáritas, focuses on providing employment opportunities for people at risk of social exclusion through the management of recycled textiles.

A ‘Cinderella’ Capture

Swift witness intervention made the arrest possible. A passer-by saw a man running from the premises with the cash register and quickly alerted a passing police patrol, providing a detailed description. As officers arrived at the scene, a second witness confirmed the suspect’s appearance and direction of travel.

In a detail reminiscent of a fairy tale, as reported by El Periódico, officers investigating the forced entry discovered a lone glove left behind at the scene. When another patrol located and detained the suspect a few streets away, they found him in possession of its matching partner. The man had reportedly worn the gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints but inadvertently left a more conclusive piece of evidence behind.

Upon spotting the officers, the thief dropped the cash register in an attempt to flee but officers quickly intercepted him. Officers recovered the till and returned it to the shop’s owners. The man, a Spanish national with what police sources described to Metrópoli as “more than 100 priors,” now faces charges of robbery with force.

Eixample Crime Spree Ends in Arrest

This incident comes just days after a separate arrest highlighted the ongoing issue of violent repeat offenders in the city. Last Friday, a 42-year-old man was arrested in the Eixample district following a 48-hour crime spree that terrorised local businesses.

The man is accused of committing five violent robberies at supermarkets and assaulting two taxi drivers across Barcelona and the neighbouring city of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat. Agents from the Fura robbery unit of the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan regional police force, detained the suspect, who was carrying a simulated firearm and Cuban documentation at the time of his arrest.

According to a statement from the High Court of Justice of Catalonia, both police forces prioritised his capture due to the escalating violence of his assaults. A Barcelona judge has since ordered him to be held in provisional custody without bail, as reported by La Vanguardia.

These two cases underscore the persistent challenge facing law enforcement in the city. Tackling recidivism remains a stated priority. Recent figures suggest a concerted police focus is having an impact; for instance, a Barna.News analysis found that Barcelona’s crime rate has fallen as police target repeat offenders. However, these incidents demonstrate the complex and cyclical nature of crime in the Catalan capital. Police frequently deal with everything from elaborate rental car scams to brazen armed robberies, highlighting the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement.
