The municipal group Junts per Reus has announced a new Reus fiscal plan. The group will present a motion at the Reus City Council plenary session this Friday. The motion proposes a significant package of tax incentives to support the local high street.

Junts per Reus describes the proposal as a “fiscal shock plan”. It intends to introduce a series of bonuses to halt increasing shop closures. Consequently, the aim is to reactivate local commerce.

Reus fiscal plan to revitalise a commercial hub

The political group argues that the city faces a critical turning point. Catalonia has long celebrated Reus as a hub for trade and retail. However, Junts warns that the municipality can no longer rely on its past reputation to sustain its economy.

In a statement regarding the upcoming motion, a spokesperson for Junts per Reus highlighted the need for proactive measures. The spokesperson said the city cannot rest on historical laurels.

“Reus has historically been a commercial reference in Catalonia, but we cannot live off rents or self-complacency. The Government has exhausted its showcase city model.”

The motion seeks to address what the opposition group views as a stagnant strategy by the current local government. Moreover, Junts hopes to encourage new business openings. It also aims to support existing merchants who are struggling to keep their shutters up. Therefore, the group will implement direct fiscal relief through this Reus fiscal plan.

The council will debate the specific details of the tax bonuses during Friday’s session. Additionally, the group hopes to secure majority support for the initiative. This is especially relevant given the Catalan government’s recent return to commercial banking for funding.
