Gaudí centenary sculpture plans have been revealed for the architect’s birthplace, Reus, marking a major tribute for the 100th anniversary of his death.
According to a report in La Vanguardia, the monumental bronze work will be installed next June outside the Prioral bell tower where Gaudí was baptised.

The sculpture, created by artist Joan Serramià, depicts Gaudí standing at 1.9 metres tall.

He is shown modelling his rejected project for the Santuary of Mercy. Furthermore, the figure stands on a workshop stool with his hat and hazelnuts placed on a bench behind him. These hazelnuts specifically reference the local region’s produce.
Commissioned by Els Amics de Gaudí de Reus, the project is personally overseen by president Maite Gaudí. She is the great-granddaughter of Gaudí’s uncle. “We wanted for Reus a sculpture where people could recognise Gaudí’s figure,” she explained. “Something that would reach people and be unique.”
The pedestal itself represents a significant collaboration. Consequently, the Sagrada Família Construction Board donated a massive 2.8-metre high stone block. This is the same stone currently being used to complete Gaudí’s masterpiece in Barcelona.
Interactive Monument Encourages Public Engagement
Stone carver Joan Mateu, also linked to the Sagrada Família, will sculpt the stone into a cloud formation. This design is inspired by the clouds decorating the Nativity Façade. Moreover, strategic carving will create subtle steps on the right side, allowing visitors to climb up and sit on the bench beside Gaudí’s figure.
The left side will feature a small carved bench. Therefore, the interactive design practically guarantees visitor photographs and engagement. The entire project carries a budget of €50,000, funded through the association’s own resources and public donations.
Reus Mayor Sandra Guaita emphasised the community focus. “We want the anniversary to reach all citizens, beyond cultural and informative events,” she stated. Municipal programming will complement the sculpture with a major mural and activities including conferences and visits to Gaudí-related sites.
This Gaudí centenary sculpture will serve as the lasting physical legacy of the anniversary year in his hometown. It connects Reus directly to the ongoing work at the Sagrada Família, creating a tangible link between the architect’s origins and his most famous, unfinished project. The installation next summer will provide a permanent new focal point for visitors exploring Gaudí’s roots.
