Barcelona-Madrid high-speed rail services are set for a dramatic transformation with plans to reach 350km/h and complete the journey in under two hours.
Transport Minister Óscar Puente announced the ambitious AV350 project during a press briefing, marking a significant upgrade to Spain’s rail infrastructure.

This development promises to revolutionise travel between the country’s two largest cities.

Barcelona-Madrid High-Speed Rail Upgrades
The AV350 initiative will involve installing new aerodynamic sleepers across the high-speed network. Consequently, these improvements will reduce aerodynamic load by 21%, allowing trains to travel 12% faster with the same energy consumption. Furthermore, the minister emphasised that Spain would become the second country worldwide, after China, to operate commercial services at this speed.
According to recent transport developments in Barcelona, infrastructure improvements are accelerating across the region. The new sleepers will enable substantial time savings on the Barcelona-Madrid high-speed rail route, which currently takes between two hours thirty minutes and three hours.
Minister Puente confirmed that works should begin shortly, with the goal of implementing these enhancements within three years. Additionally, he highlighted that increasing speed would allow for more frequent services at lower prices. This approach represents a more sustainable alternative to building entirely new tracks.
Expanded Network Connectivity
The AV350 plan includes significant network improvements beyond simply increasing speeds. Importantly, it will establish a direct connection between Barcelona and Madrid-Chamartín without requiring passage through Atocha station. Moreover, a new high-speed station will be constructed in Parla, south of Madrid.
This new station will enable passengers travelling between Andalusia and Catalonia to transfer without entering central Madrid. Therefore, journey times will decrease while connectivity improves across multiple regions. The Barcelona-Madrid high-speed rail upgrade forms part of a broader strategy to enhance Spain’s sustainable transport options.
The project aligns with ongoing efforts to improve intercity transport in Barcelona and surrounding areas. By focusing on existing infrastructure rather than new construction, the initiative aims to minimise environmental impact while maximising efficiency.
Ultimately, the Barcelona-Madrid high-speed rail enhancements promise to make train travel more attractive through reduced journey times, increased frequency and lower fares. This represents a significant step forward in Spain’s commitment to sustainable mobility and intercity connectivity.
