This Rodalia service update confirms the commuter rail network began operations today running at 80 per cent of its usual capacity. Approximately ten sections are currently substituted by road transport. This latest development follows the ongoing Rodalies rail crisis.
Antonio Carmona, the institutional spokesperson for RENFE, addressed the media at Sants station this morning. He confirmed specific punctual delays may occur. However, widespread disruption is not anticipated, provided there is no repeat of yesterday’s incidents. Those incidents were caused by a technical failure at the ADIF control centre.

Meanwhile, Spanish infrastructure manager ADIF has imposed speed restrictions. It is also carrying out safety interventions at various points across the network.
Rodalia service update: Ridership drops despite free passes
Despite issuing 320,000 free travel passes, passenger numbers have fallen significantly. According to Carmona, current user volume sits at just 75 per cent of typical levels. He attributed this decline to a broadly felt loss of confidence in the reliability of Rodalia trains.
Therefore, RENFE has stated its primary intention is to reverse this trend. The goal is to recover demand from the hundreds of thousands of commuters who rely on the service for daily mobility.
Rodalia service update: No date for full normalisation
Authorities have declined to set a specific date for the full return of services. Carmona emphasised the current focus is on guaranteeing the existing reduced railway service and its road alternatives rather than discussing deadlines.
This follows a setback yesterday. Government projections that the service would be 100 per cent restored by the start of this week proved incorrect. For today, the operator is maintaining specific frequency targets:
- R1: Five trains per hour.
- R2 Sud: Two trains per hour.
- R4: Four trains per hour.
Rodalia service update: Road transport improvements
To mitigate the impact of rail disruptions, improvements have been applied to alternative road transport plans starting today. Consequently, buses on the R8 line now complete the full route from Martorell to Granollers Centre.
In addition, a new bus service operates between Valls and Camp de Tarragona. It runs in both the morning and afternoon, providing a vital link to Barcelona via Medium Distance services.
Regarding high-speed lines, which have also suffered cancellations and delays, ADIF is reportedly working with operators. The aim is to implement changes that increase certainty for travellers.
