The offensive comes after cleaning services became overwhelmed by constant attacks, with nearly every train in major terminals now bearing spray-painted markings.
Renfe currently spends over €10 million annually removing graffiti from trains. However, specialised cleaning teams cannot keep pace with the damage. Consequently, three incidents occur daily across Catalan rail installations, totalling 724 detected intrusions by September this year.
Rodalies Graffiti Crackdown Takes Multi-Pronged Approach
The Generalitat and Renfe have coordinated a comprehensive security upgrade. Drones already in use will expand their surveillance role, monitoring rail facilities from above. Furthermore, these aircraft serve dual purposes: detecting graffiti artists in action and deterring them with flashing lights that signal police are en route.
Meanwhile, new AI-powered surveillance cameras in 89 Renfe-managed stations function like home security systems. When they detect movement in closed areas, they automatically alert security centres. This technology complements existing measures like security improvements seen elsewhere in Barcelona.
Security personnel report visible results already. Vandalism incidents have decreased compared to last year, though numbers remain concerning. The coordinated approach represents one of several infrastructure protection measures happening across the region.
Itinerant canine units will patrol graffiti hotspots as another deterrent. Experience shows security officers with dogs command greater authority against vandals. Therefore, these teams will reinforce security along vulnerable rail sections.
Adif has committed €23.2 million to perimeter security enhancements at thirty installations. These improvements will target both graffiti artists and metal thieves. Additionally, the measures align with broader urban security initiatives throughout Barcelona.
The Rodalies graffiti crackdown will culminate in a specialised anti-graffiti unit coordinating with Mossos d’Esquadra. Although no start date is confirmed, these police patrols inside stations form part of urgent Rodalies measures presented earlier this year.
According to La Vanguardia reports, Generalitat president Salvador Illa announced fines could reach €90,000 during recent policy debates. This significant penalty increase demonstrates the seriousness of the Rodalies graffiti crackdown initiative.
