Spain’s rail infrastructure manager, Adif, has expanded its comprehensive surveillance programme of the Rodalies commuter rail network. Consequently, the agency has identified 648 specific locations that require technical inspection. This announcement marks a significant increase in the scope of maintenance operations aimed at securing the network’s stability.
The extensive review focuses on critical infrastructure elements including cuttings, embankments, tunnels, bridges, and track platforms. According to the agency, over 400 technicians have been deployed to carry out these revisions. Therefore, they are paying particular attention to lines running close to the coast and areas with steep slopes or trenches.

Status of ongoing Rodalies network inspections
To date, technical teams have completed more than 500 detailed inspections. Of these, over 60% already have a finalised technical report. The operation involves visual inspections on foot as well as assessments conducted from trains.
Adif and local administrations emphasised that a continuous monitoring programme is being reinforced. This system is designed to allow for the immediate communication of potential risks. As a result, preventative measures can be adopted without delay. Meanwhile, the inspections update in real-time based on emergency needs. Therefore, additional points requiring work have been detected.
Active repair works and speed limits
Currently, maintenance crews are actively working on 31 points across the network. These works primarily consist of protecting cuttings and slopes, alongside track conditioning operations. The inspections also determine where trains must reduce speed for safety. Conversely, temporary speed restrictions can be lifted once infrastructure conditions allow.
For service to continue on these lines, Adif must issue an operational certificate. This requires ratification by the General Directorate of Traffic Safety.
Service impact and upcoming strikes
Renfe spokesperson Antonio Carmona, speaking from Sants station, confirmed that Rodalies services continue to operate with the same schedules as Wednesday. However, he warned that travellers might experience “some disruptions” due to the necessary speed limitations across the network.
Looking ahead to next week, the network faces further potential disruption. This is due to a train drivers’ strike called for 9, 10, and 11 February. Carmona stated that Renfe is working to establish minimum services of 33% generally, rising to 66% during peak hours. Negotiations are ongoing to “redirect” the situation and offer the most normal service possible.
Regarding freight transport, the closure of the Rubí tunnel remains a concern due to its significant socioeconomic impact. While the objective is to reduce the impact on freight logistics, no specific date has been given for the tunnel’s reopening. Officials note simply that “work is underway”.
