Commuters in Catalonia face another day of travel chaos as Renfe confirms the Rodalies service disruption will continue on Tuesday. The railway operator stated that Monday’s configuration will remain in place, with widespread cancellations and alternative bus services operating across the region.
No Fixed Deadline for Recovery
Antonio Carmona, Renfe’s spokesperson in Catalonia, announced that the service disruptions experienced on Monday would extend into Tuesday without significant changes. This continuation is due to simultaneous emergency works being undertaken by Adif, the infrastructure manager, at 31 critical safety points. These points are described as ‘black spots’ to ensure the safety of train drivers and passengers.

Speaking to the press, Carmona explained that while work is ongoing to progressively recover the service, the operator cannot provide a specific timeline for a return to normality without “certainties”.

Which Lines Are Affected by the Rodalies Service Disruption?
The majority of lines will continue to operate with a mix of train and bus services due to the track closures. The affected lines include:
- Partial train and bus service: R1, RG1, R3, R4, RL4, R7, R8, R13, R14, R15 and RT1.
- Full train service: R2 North, R2 South, R11, R16 and R17.
Renfe stated that their priority is to guarantee mobility through whatever means available, whether by rail or road.
Alternative Transport and Wider Impact
To mitigate the impact of the closures, a contingency plan involving 150 buses has been deployed. Additionally, 700 information staff have been distributed across the territory to assist passengers and provide real-time updates on the status of the network.
The rail disruptions are compounding transport issues across the region. The high-speed AVE service from Barcelona to Madrid continues to suffer delays, and road traffic is heavily congested. The closure of the AP-7 motorway, combined with the lack of reliable trains, has led to gridlock on the main access routes into the Catalan capital.
Passenger sentiment is shifting from indignation to resignation. Many commuters now bypass Rodalies stations entirely in favour of the alternative bus services. They distrust plans for a swift reactivation of the rail network, especially given reports of high turnover of Rodalies train drivers.
