A major Rodalies train driver strike is set to cause significant disruption across Catalonia in February. This action follows two fatal accidents in less than 48 hours. Consequently, operator Renfe intends to resume services but admits it cannot guarantee a normal timetable. Many drivers are refusing to work due to severe safety concerns.

The announcement comes amid heightened tension in the railway sector. Recent accidents in Adamuz and Gelida resulted in two deaths, including a trainee driver. This tragedy has shattered staff confidence. Many drivers now fear for their lives every time they step into a cab. Meanwhile, further details have emerged about the fatal Gelida train derailment, which has deeply shaken the community.

Why Unions Called the Rodalies Train Driver Strike

The Semaf union, representing most Spanish train drivers, has called a three-day strike on 9th, 10th, and 11th February. Union officials state this action is not about pay. Instead, it focuses strictly on the physical safety of workers and passengers.

Francisco Cárdenas, a UGT representative with 40 years of driving experience, explained the palpable fear among the workforce. “Who guarantees that it won’t happen to me tomorrow?” he asked. “We are a public service and we must guarantee it, but right now it is not clear that it can be done safely.” This sentiment reflects a broader concern about train accidents in Spain over the last 25 years.

According to the latest report from Ara, drivers consider post-accident safety checks insufficient. Therefore, they demand that Adif, the infrastructure manager, implements rigorous high-speed line safety protocols before normal commuter services resume.

Renfe Admits Service Uncertainty Amid Strike

Renfe management met union representatives from Semaf, UGT, and CCOO at Sants station on Wednesday. Following the meeting, the company stated it was prepared to restart operations. However, it acknowledged that the “position maintained by the driving staff” made a full schedule impossible to promise.

Unusually, the operator has publicly backed union demands for better infrastructure. In a statement, Renfe confirmed it supports the request for immediate corrective measures from Adif. Furthermore, it has committed to mobilising more resources to improve safety standards. This dynamic is particularly relevant following the recent transfer of Rodalies management.

Minister Urges Dialogue Over Rodalies Train Driver Strike

Transport Minister Oscar Puente has expressed sympathy for the drivers. He stated he “understands and respects” their state of mind given the recent fatalities. However, he argued that a Rodalies train driver strike is not the best solution.

Puente said he remains hopeful the strike can be called off through negotiation. “I will sit down with the unions and we will try to address their demands without damaging the railway system,” he said.

Before the crucial meeting at Sants, hundreds of workers gathered for a minute of silence. In addition, union leaders have warned that without a clear roadmap for infrastructure improvements, the sense of insecurity will persist. This could potentially lead to further staff shortages outside of official strike days.
