Ronda del Litoral Accident: Emergency Response and Investigation

Units from the Medical Emergency System (SEM) and the Guàrdia Urbana attended the site immediately. The Urban Guard’s Central Traffic Investigation Unit (UCAT) has opened an enquiry. Their goal is to determine the precise causes of this Ronda del Litoral accident.

This incident follows the death of a 61-year-old cyclist earlier in January. That accident involved a passenger car at the intersection of Carrer de Vilamarí and Carrer de la Diputació. Therefore, the loss of two lives in the first month has renewed focus on two-wheeled transport safety.

Vulnerable Road Users at Highest Risk After Ronda del Litoral Accident

Data from Barcelona City Council highlights a consistent risk pattern on the capital’s roads. Last year, 11 people died in traffic accidents within the city limits. The vast majority belonged to vulnerable groups. This aligns with findings from a recent RACC study on dangerous roads and accident costs throughout Catalonia.

The 2025 statistics show that five fatalities were motorcyclists and five were pedestrians. The final victim was a cyclist. When combined with scooter users, these groups account for the highest number of serious injuries and deaths. For example, a recent fatal scooter accident in Sant Cugat highlighted the dangers.

How Traffic Fatalities Are Counted

Official statistics often underrepresent the total loss of life due to specific reporting criteria. Current methods only include victims who die within 24 hours of an accident. Those who succumb to injuries days later are not classified as traffic accident victims in immediate data reports.

A recent case illustrates this gap in the data. An 88-year-old woman was struck by a tram in the Sant Antoni neighbourhood on 31 December 2024. She passed away from her injuries a week later, on 7 January 2025. Because of the time elapsed, she was not included in the standard traffic fatality count.

Tot Barcelona reported that the investigation into the latest collision near Montjuïc is ongoing. Police continue to work to clarify the circumstances of this tragic Ronda del Litoral accident.
