Between 1,400 and 2,000 people marched through Lleida today against energy mega-projects and in defence of rural municipalities and territorial balance. The protest, organised by 16 groups, started at 11am from Plaça Ricard Vinyes and brought together people from Lleida, Terres de l’Ebre, Anoia and Penedès.

Demonstrators marched along Prat de la Riba towards the Agriculture Department headquarters, where they dumped bags of compost and organic matter as a symbolic rejection of companies promoting energy initiatives. The protest finished with speeches outside the Government delegation building.

The rally brought together citizens from various rural areas of Catalonia to show their opposition to large energy projects they say threaten territorial balance and the sustainability of rural municipalities.
