Sabadell airport continues waiting for investment promised 24 years ago. The facility’s master plan was approved back in 2001, but most of it has never been built. Only a control tower and a new terminal have materialised. Meanwhile, Barcelona-El Prat airport secured a development agreement just three months ago.

The contrast between the two airports is striking. Whilst El Prat moves forward with recent agreements between the Catalan government and Aena, Sabadell remains in the background. The Vallès Occidental airport has been pushing for improvements for decades. However, promised infrastructure keeps getting delayed.
The Cambra de Comerç de Sabadell has been particularly vocal about the situation. They’re demanding action on the stalled master plan. Key missing elements include improved access roads, railway connections, runway expansion and an aeronautical museum. All of these were supposed to be delivered years ago.
Local business leaders argue the airport needs proper investment to serve the region. The facility has potential for both commercial flights and aviation education. Nevertheless, without the planned infrastructure, Sabadell airport cannot reach its full capacity. The situation frustrates local institutions who have watched El Prat receive attention whilst they continue waiting.
The comparison with El Prat is unavoidable. Both airports serve the Barcelona metropolitan area. Yet one receives continuous investment and development agreements. The other has been stuck with an outdated plan for nearly a quarter century. Sabadell’s business community wants that imbalance addressed.
